I’d swear Danny Agnew and Bramble Trionfo are the coolest people in New York. Yea, pretty damn cool.
Fellow photographer and blogger Matthew Hranek has turned his love of the less beaten path into a tv show, Alternate Route, airing on Esquire Network . Always taking side trips on his travel shoots, Matthew highlights the coolest places: eating where locals eat, buying artisan goods and supporting the quality products of the local economies. Cheers Matthew!!!
This image must surely have been taken on a Saturday, for that was when I got to go to the studio in those days. It is a mid-morning view, on the roof of my first studio at 16 Beaver Street circa 06/07. This is of my first larger scale Graffoto (graffiti + foto). It was a natural extension of two works I had just completed inside, of two, 12 foot columns wrapped in photographs, what I call Fotem Poles (totem + foto) , or simply Fotems. I miss that roof, it was a creative explosion up there.
Good times. Good times.
Really, I’m just tired, so this is about as far back as I’m gonna look for art. And actually, it works for me. A few years back Davina Reeves was Ms. New York. Pageants. Wholesome goodness.
There’s really no question about who the POP! queen of Madison Avenue is – it’s Lisa Perry of course!!! I’ve photographed her several times. One of my favorites is in Palm Beach in front of the dots, one of her signature elements she integrates into everything she does. If you get the chance, check out her shop… it’s over the top POP!
I just made this piece from images used for a Billy Reid shoot from a few years back. So American!
This is one of my installations from December, 2008, placed on the safety barrier between a short stretch of highway and sidewalk on the FDR in the UES. All my installations were designed to come down after an undetermined time of wear and tear from mother nature, soot and never-ending urban onslaught… but of course this one was gone inside a week or so.
This is a cool interview I did a few years back while my street art installation phase was in full swing.

It still pretty much holds true, I just haven’t been making art!!!! But I’ll tell you a secret… I recently started again. YIPEEE!!!!
The image below is circa 2007, when my studio was on Beaver St. The installation was on the alley behind my building, Marketfield Place.
More from the F/W ’14 campaign I shot for Harbour International. This was such a fun shoot and after we wrapped up shooting inside, we moved outdoors for some simple shots to finish the day.
Steve Bryant, the Executive Editor at men’s lifestyle site Inside Hook, has made it clear that he’d rather be in the south of France at The Cannes Film Festival… making videos of beautiful French women speaking with their smokey, sensual French accents…
C’est la vie, dude.
I’m just going to remind him, that the type of unrestricted frivolity that happens at the Sobey Studio, happens in New York. In the East Village. Down in the basement with Van Halen II crankin’, models in lingerie that smoke B40’s and the always liberal pours of Japanese whiskey.
So, you go drink your Sancerre and have your beaches and your celebrity moments. Recharge. Take your time. New York is waiting for your return. When you’re ready.
While shooting a lookbook for The Keegan Collection, we moved in for a few beauty shots too. The makeup was awesome. This shot made its way to the large-scale as street art too.
Ever since the band Lip Talk came by for a shoot, I can’t stop listening to their music! I consider myself very fortunate to have met these extremely talented artists. They have played at Glasslands and Terminal 5 and I can’t wait until their next show!!!! I’ll be front row…
…from my East 8th Street studio, ca. 2011. These surly characters may make you want to turn around and walk the other way, but rest assured, I only associate myself with the best of degenerates… Shane Fonner, Danny Agnew and Stephen Biebel. Good times. Good times.
What photographer doesn’t jump at the chance for a 2 page spread vs. a single page??? But I didn’t have a horizontal shot in the whole shoot! No problem. The left side of the fashion shot went dark, so I went and shot a few frames of the wet sidewalk that had a dark right side (with a similar focal length, perspective and color) put them together, and voi la, double page spread!!!
Sandwiched together are one of my early abstract images and a shot from my recent Daniel Won shoot… for upcoming campaign marketing! Just my thing.
On the heels of my recent shoot for menswear designer Daniel Won, I get the chance to sit back and look at the shoot as a whole. And as a whole… I think we knocked it out of the park! Ross Higgins, our model, is of one of the best, most engaged, fun and talented models I’ve had the pleasure of working with. And with his baby blues and strong jaw… you’ll be seeing him for years to come.
Although, technically, I’m not supposed to show images of fashion before the stuff goes to market…. here’s a sample from my recent lookbook shoot of the F/W ’15 Daniel Won Collection. As usual there’s lots of leather, special treatments & thoughtful details in his hip, urban, menswear line. WWW.MARTINSOBEY.COM
…from the catalogue of insanity that blisters through the mayhem of my brain, seething its way to the surface.
Sometimes, keeping it all going means change… even though nothing is wrong with the current stuff. It just needs a little… life! Something that stimulates your senses right now, and inspires you to keep at it. Finding your voice, on your terms. Chipping away. Carving. Sliding… into your niche.
Part of what I enjoy in this medium is the flexibility to change the appearance of my work on a whim with what I feel is a priority at that moment. Don’t be surprised if everything is different in 2 or 3 days… or every time you look at it for that matter.
Welcome the new look(s) of The Sobey Rollout.
A couple of pieces from my work with Harbour Intl. More coming down the pike…
